Our most recent Yellowstone wildlife encounter on July 7th, was spectacular and ended on a high note. Our Yellowstone Caldera Tour visited Hayden Valley around noon. We stopped for lunch perched up on one of the pull outs with a great view. While we sat for lunch, we watched a juvenile grizzly bear approach two sandhill cranes while they were protecting their nest and territory. The male sandhill crane all 10 lbs, which is slightly larger and monomorphic (presents similar features) compared to the female, presented a very large stance to the grizzly and chased it away several times with a combination of running and flying. The wingspan on a sandhill crane is about 77 inches. This male sandhill crane's aggressive nature and wide wingspan successfully intimidated the grizzly into leaving the area. While I don't have photos to share our encounter, that is what makes the moment so captivating.
We offer wildlife tours, geology and landscape tours at affordable prices. Please contact us. For a quick response, please send us a text message. We are a small husband wife tour business and are often found giving tours in the park. Both of us were present during the sandhill crane vs. the grizzly bear viewing. Please keep in mind that Yellowstone does not have cell service throughout most of the park. Text messaging is the fastest way to contact us since we receive text, whereas VM may take several days to retrieve.
